Tearing down Walls of all kinds
After today, I'm pretty sure I know where the expression "Tearing down Walls" came from! Today was absolutely magical! Not only was it Marianne's birthday (HBD), but it was the day to walk the Berlin Wall! We started at the beginning where there is a little memorial with original intact sections of the wall and information. We then walked the entire length of where the wall stood, stopped off at Bernauer StraBe street, another area of stories where families were separated by East and West, saw a very famous underground escape tunnel, checked out Checkpoint Charlie π and ended at the Gallery - a section where local artists have painted murals on the wall representing Berlin, politics, the world and any other hippy/punk/anti-government you can think of - completely awesome! Unfortunately, there is a huge graffiti problem here and some of the murals have an extra special touch to them - you'll see. We fit in some traditional Berlin Currywurst, about 15 tourist traps for matching Berlin shirts (stay tuned for the Homecoming post for a pic), and ended with a Baliwood Indian birthday dinner Raj, PhD would be proud of!
I thought this post would be better read through pictures, so this is the end of my dialogue. I hope the images have an effect on you as they did on me - this amazingly big world is full of stories and I find a little bit more of myself every time I hear one. :)
